*Denzel Washington will open this year’s San Sebastian Film Festival with the European premiere of his latest movie, “The Equalizer,” directed by Antoine Fuqua, festival organizers said on Wednesday.

The ator will also receive the Donostia Lifetime Achievement Award at the fest, which will be held Sept. 19-27 in the northern Spanish seaside resort city, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

In “The Equalizer,” based on a 1980s TV series, Washington plays a former intelligence officer drawn out of retirement to battle a gang of ultra-violent Russian mobsters. It will be distributed by Sony Pictures Entertainment and is scheduled for U.S. release and Imax screens worldwide on Sept. 26.

In announcing the lifetime achievement award, festival organizers cited Washington’s past roles in such films as “Glory,” “Malcolm X,” “Philadelphia,” “Inside Man” and “Flight,” as well as his many acting awards and nominations.

Fuqua directed “Training Day,” for which Washington received the Oscar for best actor in 2002.
