The Huffington Post reports that the upcoming film “Exodus: Gods and Kings” is the latest feature to catch negative feedback from movie watchers who have taken their anger to Twitter with the hashtag: #BoycottExodusMovie.
The cast of “Exodus” is a mostly white affair with Christian Bale and Sigourney Weaver among the actors portraying kings, queens and prophets. On the other side, slaves, servants and low-class civilians appearing in the Ridley Scott-directed film are played by actors of color, the Post noted.
In addition to the film’s entertainers, set design for “Exodus” has generated criticism for offensive transformation.
News of the whitewashing of “Exodus” is shining a light on a long-standing issue in Hollywood, where whitewashing has been a regular thing over the years. Case in point: Elizabeth Taylor playing Cleopatra in 1963.
