Chadwick Boseman of “42” fame, stars as Brown. Cast in the role not just for his acting and dancing talents, but first and foremost, because he hails from James Brown’s hometown of South Carolina.
“That’s important,” Director Tate Taylor shared with EURweb’s Lee Bailey during the 20th Annual Essence Festival in New Orleans. “One of the first things I knew I was looking for in choosing my James Brown is I wanted to know where the actor was from. I knew it was very important that whoever played James needed to understand the soil of South Carolina and Georgia. If you’re from there, and your family and people are from there, it’s in your blood. And I knew to get the voice; to get the cadence… the walk, the knowledge of his environment was important. And I already loved Chad’s work and when someone said he was from South Carolina, I went ‘I guarantee you that’s going to be James Brown.'”
EURweb’s Lee Bailey caught up Taylor, Boseman, and co-star Nelsan Ellis (Bobby Bird) at the 20th annual Essence Festival. In addition to Taylor’s comments, Boseman and Ellis provided insight on the challenges with filming what is sure to become a classic .
