*Some people dream of living the life of the rich and famous, at least at some point in their lives.
While celebrities are often admired for their glamour and fame, plenty of famous people are looked up to because they give back to their communities.
Celebrities help draw attention to a cause, as people tend to support their role models and the causes they support. These days, many celebrities are working on issues they strongly believe in and promote those charities to try to get fans involved.
Singer songwriter Usher is a seasoned philanthropist who found passion in connecting disadvantaged children with positive role models and mentors. In 1999 Usher (and his mother) founded New Look with the mission to better the lives of underprivileged adolescents and engage with disconnected youth. This summer Usher celebrated the 15th anniversary of the New Look foundation, Usher’s non-profit organization committed to developing future global leaders and cultivating a path to leadership and career opportunities for non-educated youth. New Look’s supportive partners and high-profile community of influencers celebrated together in recognition of the foundation’s global impact on thousands of people, according to BlackCelebrityGiving.com. The event included a live auction raising $98,000, a VIP reception at a private residence and a performance by Josh Kaufman, season six winner of “The Voice.”
While you can certainly donate to the organization, helping educate children and teens can be a hands-on activity, too. If you can’t volunteer directly with New Look, search for an organization in your city that fosters educational goals for disadvantaged youth.
Country music singer Miranda Lambert founded the MuttNation Foundation, which is a non-profit organization working to help end pet homelessness. Fans of Lambert often see her promoting the organization and they want to help the charity, too. It is easy for people to give back to charities like this as most people have a similar charity close to home – the local animal shelter. People are able to donate by volunteering time at the shelter, sending supplies to the shelter and/or making monetary donations if they choose.
Gabrielle Union, star of “Bring It On” and “Being Mary Jane,” has been a strong voice for sexual abuse victims, speaking out as a sexual assault survivor herself. In spring 2014, Gabrielle co-hosted the Reid & Fiorentino Call of the Game dinner and spoke about her experience as a rape survivor. She also advocated the Lauren’s Kids foundation, an organization dedicated to sexual abuse prevention, awareness and education, as well as survival healing with guidance and support. Call of the Game is a gala honoring the work of individuals who make a difference in the community, including pro basketball players LeBron James and James Jones.
Because counseling abuse victims takes specialized training it is much easier to make monetary donations to go towards the foundation itself. The easiest way to donate money to this charities is through the Internet, which, in the long run, increases risks of stolen information such as credit card numbers and more. Celebrities might seem like trustworthy people and have good causes, but potential philanthropists should do their homework on a charity they are interested in donating to.
When researching celebrity charities to get involved with, it is very important to look closely at the charity, especially before giving out personal information. Personal information includes data like social security and credit card numbers. Research how reliable the charity is, who leads the foundation, the cause of the charity and where donations are spent. Sometimes, even after doing extensive research and trusting an organization, problems do occur such as identity theft.
Although trusted charities do their best to protect their client’s information, data breaches do occur. Data breaches usually happen after a when a business’s or foundation’s system is compromised and confidential information is collected. To help prevent problems such as identity theft, it is a good idea to check websites like LifeLock.com. Lifelock is an identity protection program that helps prevent identity theft by being proactive in the way it monitors its clients.
“Studies show that individuals who receive a data breach notification letter are more than four times as likely to become victims of identity theft,” LifeLock states.
