Laz Alonso and Debra Messing in the pilot episode of NBC’s “The Mysteries of Laura”

*After co-starring opposite Meagan Good in NBC’s short-lived 2013 drama “Deception,” Laz Alonso is returning to the network this fall opposite a new leading lady – who is also coming fresh from a cancelled NBC drama.

“Smash” star Debra Messing toplines “The Mysteries of Laura,” premiering Wed. Sept. 24 at 8 p.m. The comedy-drama has Messing as NYPD homicide detective Laura Diamond, whose unruly twin sons at home make the bad guys on her job look like saints.

Alonso stars as Laura’s partner, Det. Billy Soto. “The beauty about these two characters is that they both bring a completely different sensibility to each case,” Alonso told EURweb during interviews last month. “They just work hand in hand. They don’t duplicate each other’s skill level. One is good at one thing, the other one’s good at another thing and together they pair up really nicely.”

Det. Soto is also of Afro-Cuban descent, a trait that mirrors Alonso’s own heritage. His family emigrated from Cuba before he was born 40 years ago in Washington D.C.
