*Yes, Fox’s new fall drama “Red Band Society” is set in a pediatric hospital and follows a bunch of teens with serious illnesses. But Octavia Spencer, who plays the head nurse in the kids’ unit, says the show is by no means a “downer.”
“You think set in a pediatrics hospital, oh, my God. Sick kids. But I was surprised at how uplifting it was,” Spencer told us. “And then to realize that kids do spend that much time in a hospital and go through some of the normalcies of wanting to go to dances and then maybe having a dance or all of the ups and downs of adolescence in that.”
The 44-year-old Oscar winner, currently on the big screen in the James Brown biopic, “Get On Up,” tells us why she decided to commit to a television series at this fertile time in her film career.
Fox’s “Red Band Society” premieres Wednesday, Sept. 17 at 9 p.m.
