*Marking the 12th year of this celebrity laden event and the inaugural year of it being held in Atlanta, GA, the 2014 “Ford Neighborhood Awards” hosted by Steve Harvey, did not fail to impress when it came to the blue carpet stroll this year.
An excited crowd gathered outside of Phillips Arena on August 9th just to catch a glimpse of all the celebrities walking the carpet, many of whom were category presenters or entertainers for the evening.
With performances by artists such as Chrisette Michele, Anthony Hamilton, and Neyo, the awards show’s intent and purpose is to honor local businesses, schools, and outstanding people who have made an impact in African American communities throughout the nation. These are the dedicated persons, small businesses, and schools which may otherwise be overlooked in this ‘mainstream, big box, easily recognizable brand name franchised society’ that we live in.
Educators, coaches, churches, small business owners, and community leaders are the backbone of the African American community, promoting a positive environment and encouraging entrepreneurship. The “Neighborhood Awards” pays homage to these nominees in the following 12 areas of: Best High School Coach; Best Church Choir; Best Nail Salon; Best School Teacher; Best Barber Shop; Best Beauty Salon; Best Barbecue Place; Best Car Wash; Best Soul Food Place; Best High School; Best Church; and Best Community Leader.
A common sentiment of the nominees on the blue carpet was that of thankfulness for being acknowledged and appreciated in their communities, paving the way for the creation and sustainability of even more small businesses and effective leadership in our communities.
