*Black History Month was first celebrated in the United Kingdom in 1987.
Since then its been celebrated in the month of October annually and with each celebration comes with a theme.
Ghanaian analyst Akyaaba Addai-Sebo is credited for making Black History Month celebration possible in the UK when he realized the need for your Black Britons to have an identity of their own and also to be aware of the many significant contributions, black people in the UK have made to global history and be proud. And to also recognize contributions of black people around the world.
During this time, Exciting range of events take place across the UK to entertain, inform, educate and inspire in Universities, colleges, schools, libraries, museums and open events as well. Addai-Sebo approached the then Greater London Council with the suggestion to set aside a time to mark Black History and the rest, they say is history. Supported by many, this year’s celebration is also supported by UK’s Prime Minister, David Cameron.
