Iyanla Vanzant did just that while providing a glimpse into the mind of a single mother abandoned by the father of her children during a recent episode of her show “Iyanla, Fix My Life.”
A clip from the show features Nathaniel, a father of 28 children from 16 different women; and Jay Williams, a father of 34. When asked what it feels like to wake up knowing he has this much responsibility on his plate, Nathaniel admitted to feeling “helpless” when he thinks of his children.
“I’m full of shame and guilt. I’m bitter,” he told Vanzant, who turned the tables to put Nathaniel in the shoes of a single mom.
“Let me talk to you as a woman, as a single mother,” she said. “I gave you the most intimate part of who as I am as a woman. I opened my soul to you when I allowed you to lay with me and I trusted you. I trusted that you would be there. I trusted that you were the promise that my daddy never gave me. I trusted you with my soul, with my body, with my being. I trusted you and you left me. Not only did you leave me, you left me here with this child. Just like you don’t know who you are, I don’t know who I am. And now I’ve got a child and I’ve got to figure it out. And you tell me, that you get to go off and figure it out and have other women and I’m here with your child? I don’t get to go figure it out. That’s where she is.”
“All of them, though?,” Nathaniel replied. “Even that the ones that we weren’t in a relationship…”
“Doesn’t matter,” Vanzant said.
Nathaniel’s chat with Vanzant struck a nerve with those in attendance, who, according to madamenoire.com, became emotion and cried, as well as Oprah Winfrey, who, called it one of the most powerful she’s ever seen on television.
