*What would you do if an adult slapped your child for acting up?

This is the premise of NBC’s upcoming eight-episode miniseries, “The Slap,” starring Thandie Newton and Melissa George, reports Deadline.com.

Based on the 2011 Australian short-run series, “The Slap” is described as a complex family drama that explodes from an incident where a man slaps another couple’s misbehaving child. The dispute pulls the family apart, begins to expose long-held secrets and ignites a lawsuit that challenges the core American values of all who are pulled into it.

Newton will play Aisha, a doctor, wife of Hector and mother of their two children. She readies herself for the onslaught as she makes preparations for her husband’s birthday party, irritated but somewhat amused when her in-laws show up.

George reprises her role from the Australian version as Rosie, a hippie wife and meddlesome mother of Hugo, the 5-year-old boy who is slapped after waving a bat in another boy’s face. Convinced that Hugo has been unalterably traumatized, she sets in motion a confrontation that embroils and affects everyone who witnessed it.

They join Peter Sarsgaard, Mary-Louise Parker, Zachary Quinto and Brian Coxin the cast. No airdate has been announced for The Slap, which is directed by Lisa Cholodenko, written by Jon Robin Baitz and produced by Universal Television and Australia’s Matchbox Pictures, producer of the original.
