Chris Rock and Rosario Dawson in “Top Five”

*In the upcoming film “Top Five,” Rosario Dawson plays a New York Times journalist tasked with writing a profile on Andre Allen, a comedian who has become a blockbuster film star, but yearns to be respected as a serious actor.

Dawson’s character Chelsea Brown, along with the film itself, so impressed critics and studios at this year’s Toronto Film Festival that it sparked an insane bidding war (eventually won by Paramount, which opens the film on Dec. 12). But Dawson says she wasn’t immediately sold on the part when Rock first pitched it to her.

“Ms. Nine-Meetings-to-Get-You-to-Do-a-Movie,” Rock joked to her at the film’s recent press conference in New York.

“He says that I auditioned him!” Dawson said of Rock over the laughter of journalists.

She went on to explain how difficult is was for her to understand Chelsea based on what was written in the script.

“I felt like that was the one character that wasn’t just perfectly on the page,” she said. “Like I saw what she could potentially be, but it just felt like I wasn’t sure.”
