*Hundreds turned out to pay tribute to Los Angeles’ unsung activists at the 2014 (31st annual) “Testimonial to Leadership” banquet held at the USC Radisson.
The dinner in previous years has paid tribute to figures ranging from the late Betty Shabazz and Percy Sutton to Congresswomen Karen Bass and Maxine Waters.
This year, honorees featured a collection of Los Angeles Activists who don’t garner the media attention that other activists such as Rev Al Sharpton or Rev Jesse Jackson, but whose work is invaluable in the Los Angeles community.
Marqueece Harris Dawson CEO of the Community Coalition, Heather Repenning from the office of Mayor Garcetti, Umar Hakim from the ILM Foundation and Sharyn Muhammad-Barker of Bilal Islamic center were recognized for their respective efforts in activism that has improved the quality of life for Angelenos.
The dinner was chaired by Long time civil rights leader Najee Ali of Project Islamic Hope.
