*(New York) – The Apollo Theater  2014 winter season which starred soul music mainstays Sharon Jones and Charles Bradley  ends  soon.

Sunday, January 18, 2015, 3 p.m. in celebration of the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday, WNYC’s annual Martin Luther King Day celebration will return to the Apollo Theater for a special edition of the Apollo’s Uptown Hall series, concluding the season lineup.

The celebration brings together Harlem audiences with scholars, community leaders, and activists to engage in conversation about King’s legacy and how his teachings affect us today.

Apollo’s winter line up so far has included: legendary actor and social activist Harry Belafonte and former New York City Mayor, David N. Dinkins, who were among the panelists for Apollo Uptown Hall: The Harlem/South Africa Connection, a panel discussion part of the Africa Now! Festival; reggae superstar Maxi Priest joined the One Love: A Bob Marley Tribute Concert and jazz vocalist Lizz Wright  featured in the popular Holiday show Ellington at Christmas.

Also, the theater  inducted Apollo Legend & Jazz architect Louis Armstrong into its Apollo Walk of Fame in November, kicking off a special weekend of New Orleans Jazz in Harlem, headlined by Jazz impresario Irvin Mayfield.

These productions were complemented by the Apollo’s signature series Amateur Night at the Apollo, which culminated its 80th season with the Super Top Dog finals in November, and Apollo Music Café, the popular series showcasing independent musicians in an intimate club-like atmosphere on the Theater’s Soundstage, which made its return in October.

“This season embodied our commitment to bring programming that’s as diverse as its audiences and builds upon the Apollo’s rich legacy in contemporary ways.” said Mikki Shepard, Executive Producer of the Apollo Theater.

The upcoming Uptown Hall town meeting honoring MLK is free and open to the public with first admittance given to those who have registered. For more details visit www.apollotheater.org
