*Both Martin Luther King and his wife are played by British actors in the upcoming film “Selma,” with the Oxford-born David Oyelowo is in the title role and Coretta Scott King played by London native Camen Ejogo (“Sparkle”).
In addition to bringing an American accent to the role, Ejogo says she and Oyelowo worked hard to convey the intimacy and closeness shared by the couple – something the two rarely showed in public.
“I think David and I always intended to make these people as authentic a couple as possible, and that includes sensuality, that includes touching, that includes being intimate,” Ejogo said at a recent press conference. “And even if we haven’t seen it before, I don’t think in any way we felt we were doing a disservice to the legacy or the heroism of these people by showing that they had human desires.”
Ejogo, 41, marches into “Selma” having already played Coretta Scott King in a movie. She met her current husband Jeffrey Wright when starring opposite his version of MLK in the 2000 HBO film “Boycott.” The couple currently lives in Brooklyn with their two children.
Below, Ejogo says portraying the more intimate moments of Coretta Scott King will ultimately make her more relatable to audiences.
Director Ava DuVernay’s “Selma” opens in theaters on Christmas Day.
