*When a production casts J.B. Smoove in a role, usually that character is someone turned all the way up.
Whether it was Leon on HBO’s “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” a version of himself on BET’s “Real Husbands of Hollywood,” or actually himself as host of NBC’s “Last Comic Standing,” the comedian has carved a Hollywood niche for himself as the crazy brother.
So when Chris Rock needed someone to play his calm, level-headed, no-nonsense security guard/assistant in “Top Five,” no one was as confused about the request as Smoove.
“Typically, when someone calls J.B., they want the over-the-top J.B.,” he said during a press conference for the film. “They want the waaaay over the top J.B., but this shows [Chris Rock’s] growth and what he wants for this particular project.”
“Top Five” stars Rock as a comedian-turned-actor who is about to marry his reality star wife (Gabrielle Union) in a televised wedding – an event he fears will ruin his efforts to be taken seriously in Hollywood. Rosario Dawson plays a journalist interviewing Rock’s character for the New York Times, and J.B. is almost like his body man, making sure the riff raff in his life is weeded out.
It’s one of the few times J.B. does not have to be the class clown.
“Top Five” opens in theaters on Friday.
