*The new “Star Wars” trailer that premiered on Black Friday has a lot of folks excited for the J.J. Abrams sequel, but some people have apparently taken issue with the racial makeup of what appears to be a Stormtrooper, played by black British actor John Boyega.
The 22-year-old used Instagram to gush over the excitement generated by the teaser’s online debut. He also briefly addressed the heated discussion on social media over whether a black Stormtrooper made sense.
In the “Star Wars” series, Stormtroopers were originally clones of Jango Fett, an ethnic “Mandalorian” played by New Zealand-born actor Temuera Derek Morrison, of partial Maori descent.
Later in the storyline, when Boyega’s “black Stormtrooper” character would’ve lived, Stormtroopers were recruited from general populations — making a Stormtrooper of any race certainly feasible.
In any case , the hashtag #BlackStormtrooper popped up on Twitter and the teaser’s YouTube page began filling with comments that ranged from supportive to down right racist.
Regarding the idea of a black Stormtrooper, Boyega responded to the haters with four words: “Get used to it.”
Some fans also pointed out Boyega may not even be a Stormtrooper — he could be a rebel in a Stormtrooper uniform, like Han Solo and Luke Skywalker in “Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope.”
Fans will have to wait until the December 2015 premiere of “Star Wars VII: The Force Awakens” to find out more about Boyega’s character.
