*If a newly released clip for Lifetime’s new Whitney Houston biopic is any indication, then the network could be on its way to redeeming itself from the debacle known as “Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B.”
Unlike the Aaliyah movie, Lifetime has the rights to the late singer’s music. Portraying Houston, Yaya DaCosta looks to have everything about Houston down, from revered singer’s mannerisms to the bulging neck veins that noticeably show as she hits her high notes.
In the 56-second clip, DaCosta is in the studio recording Houston’s classic hit, “I’m Your Baby Tonight,” as her producers jam to her singing. “I’m Your Baby Tonight” as well as the other Houston songs in the film were re-recorded by singer Deborah Cox, who confessed to feeling the pressure of recording songs made famous by Houston.
“I knew I had some big shoes to fill,” she told Billboard. “But I did the job that was supposed to be done.”
“Whitney” is set to air at 8/7c Jan. 17 on Lifetime. To see the new clip, check out the video below:
