common john legend golden globes

*After winning a Golden Globe for their song “Glory,” from the soundtrack to “Selma,” Common and John Legend stepped backstage to talk about the road to their names being announced as winners.

“I hoped for it. I wanted it. I prayed for it, but, you know you never know what could happen,” Common told reporters moments after coming off stage at the Beverly Hilton. “I believed in myself and I’m a firm believer in you gotta think the things that you want, and visualize, and all those things. So I was planning for us to get it, but humbly, you have to say you never know what could happen. It’s always best to be prepared with something.”

“Wasn’t he prepared? This man is a lyricist!” Legend interrupted, noting the rapper’s eloquent acceptance speech. “That speech was moving to me and I was just honored to be up there with him. Honestly.”

Below, Common gives props to Legend for writing the melody that inspired his lyrics to “Glory.”
