Beyoncé Provides Explanation for ‘Precious Lord’ Grammy Performance … Kinda

beyonce-precious-lord-grammy-2015_8167660-51960_1800x945*Beyoncé’s performance of “Take My Hand, Precious Lord” was undoubtedly one of the highlights of this year’s Grammy Awards.

And while that’s apparent, it doesn’t escape the backlash Queen Bey got for doing the song in the first place instead of Ledisi, who sang the song in movie “Selma” and was in the audience watching someone else perform the tune. Nevertheless, Beyoncé looks to have heard all the critics … or anticipated the criticism … and decided to address the situation via a YouTube video (see it below).

In the eight-minute, Mrs. Carter explained her decision to perform “Precious Lord, Take My Hand,” which her mother Tina Knowles sang to her when she was a child. In light of black men being the victims of violence at the hands of law enforcement in these current troubling times, Beyoncé mentioned that it was important to showcase “the vulnerability and the strength of Black men.”

“My grandparents marched with Dr. King,” Beyoncé said as she explained why the Grammy performance was personally important to her. “My father was a part of the first generation of Black men that attended an all-White school. My father has grown up with a lot of trauma from those experiences. I feel like now I can sing for his pain. I can sing for my grandparents’ pain. I can sing for some of the families that have lost their sons.”

Despite Beyoncé’s reasoning for doing the performance, Madamenoire.com noted how there was no mention of Ledisi in the video. In the eyes of some, it should’ve fallen on John Legend and Common to tell Beyoncé no when she asked to be a part of their performance.

“Perhaps, they should have suggested Ledisi’s name, saying they could do it together or advise her to change the song since she sang the exact one in the movie they were promoting,” the site wondered.

Check out Beyoncé’s video below and weigh in on whether her explanation justifies taking Ledisi’s place for the Grammy performance.
