Common on Why He Didn’t High Five Oprah on Way to Oscar Stage (Watch)

Oprah Winfrey and Common*In the heat of the moment, everybody makes mistakes, right?

According to Common, that was the case during the Oscars when he passed by Oprah Winfrey as he and John Legend were making their way to the stage to accept their Academy Award for best original song for “Glory” from the historical drama “Selma.”

The moment was especially noticeable in light of Winfrey, who produced and starred in “Selma,” raising her hand to high five the rapper-actor. Despite it looking like he intentionally snubbed Winfrey, Common stated that it was not done on purpose.

“You’re just so in the moment, that I saw David Oyelowo first, and I was going to him,” the lyricist explained on “Jimmy Kimmel Live.” “I was wondering if Oprah was really facing John — so I didn’t know if this high five was for me or for John, so I just went safe.”

Realizing what he did, Common quickly made amends with Winfrey.

“I made sure I talked to her the next day. We talked the next day and it was like, ‘You know I wasn’t tryna play you out.’”

Now that we got the whole story and things have been resolved, what’s the moral of the story, good people?

“Never leave Oprah hanging.”
