David Oyelowo’s ‘Captive’ Picked Up by Paramount

*Paramount Pictures has secured worldwide distribution rights to “Captive,” the based-on-a-true-story thriller starring Selma‘s “David Oyelowo” and Kate Mara, reports Deadline.com. The studio has already announced a release date of September 18, 2015.

Directed by Jerry Jameson and written by Brian Bird, the film centers on the real life story of Ashley Smith (Mara), a single mom who struggles to overcome her drug addiction to regain custody of her daughter. But she is taken hostage by an escaped, quadruple murderer (played by Oyelowo) in about a polar opposite a part as possible from Selma‘s Martin Luther King).

Ashley’s only defenses: faith in God, a love for her daughter, and the book A Purpose Driven Life, parts of which she reads aloud to her captor during the harrowing ordeal. This leads to an epiphany for both Ashley and the convict.

The film is based on the book Unlikely Angel: The Untold Story Of The Atlanta Hostage Hero by Smith with Stacy Mattingly.
