Ludacris on New Album, Movie; Opens Up about Custody Battle

ludacris, vibe,*Ludacris is gearing up for his upcoming album, “Ludaversal,” on Tuesday, March 31, and his movie, “Furious 7,” on Friday, April, 3. Both are set for the same week.

The seasoned rapper opened up to Vibe about his new album, newer rappers on the block, “Furious 7” and the custody battle for his one-year-old daughter, Cai Bella Bridges.

He didn’t mean to take off five years from music. He hasn’t released an album since 2010’s “Battle of the Sexes,” but he wasn’t inspired.

“I took a little time off because after seven consecutive albums you need to get inspired again to have some sh*t to write about,” he said.

“However, I didn’t mean for it to be five years—more like three. When we were shooting ‘Furious 7 of course there was the untimely death of our friend Paul Walker,” he added.  “Production got shut down and everything got pushed back an entire year. In the end, everything ended up working out perfectly because I was able to get rid of some records and continue to record and make the greatest body of work possible.”

He’s been gone for a minute. And there are new Atlanta rappers on the scene like — Rich Homie Quan, Father, Migos and Young Thug.

“I love the energy, man,” he said. “I’m always embracing what’s new because I have to continue to keep afloat and I’m in competition to a degree with new artists as well as the ones that have been in the game as long as I have.”

“So it’s definitely something that still inspires me, even if it’s not necessarily my type of music,” he added. I hear the hunger and the tone in their voice and I love their creativity and artistry.

Nevertheless, lyrics from the rapper’s previous work were used against him in court. He talked about his art being used in the custody battle, which he later won.

“People will use whatever they can to try to paint a picture of who they think you are. It’s as simple as that,” he said. “Same thing as when Bill O’Reilly tried to tell me what type of person I am based off my lyrics.”

“All I can tell you is that hip-hop is a coded language. It’s very misunderstood,” he added.  “If you don’t speak the language, then you’re only assuming that you know what we’re talking about. But you don’t, so there you have it.
