Ringside Update/ Mayweather vs Pacquiao … It’s About Time!

mayweather pacquiao - la

*There’s an old saying folks, “anything worth while takes time.” And the appetite for this much awaited showdown actually started some five years ago. It’s my opinion that it was the most smartest move ever done by all involved. Because now you have something that’s evolved into the biggest event in the history of the sport and the projected sums of cash that both fighters are said to be possibly pocketing is in excess of hundreds of millions.

As far as this writer is concerned, it was well worth the wait.
If you’re looking for a hotel reservation for the weekend of May 2, forget about it!

Even this writer had difficulty finding a place to lay my head (And I’m not kidding folks!).

And to show you how huge this event is, they’re only having one press conference which was held just the other day downtown L.A. at the Nokia where both fighters walked down a red carpet that was long as a basketball court. The next time they meet will be May 2 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. And as I always say,we’ll see what happens.

Another chapter in the continuing saga of Al Haymon’s “Premier Boxing Champions” took place out in Ontario, Calif. Friday night where we saw some of the best fights take place this year with the return of Shawn “Showtime” Porter, Chris “The Nightmare” Arreola, and Andre Berto with all three of them winning their respective bouts.

Andre Berto (shown in file photo above) picked apart a competitive Josesito Lopez before his home crowd before ending the fight in the sixth.

There’s so much to talk about regarding this event so why don’t we start off with Shawn Porter as we saw him make a big statement with a six round knockout over Eric Bone’ who by the way was a last minute replacement for Roberto Garcia who unfortunately became ill.

This one started off very competitive folks as Porter appeared to have his hands full in the early part of this bout but he soon was able to get his groove going in the fifth and started to connect with some solid shots to the head and body. And finally at 2 minutes and 30 seconds in the sixth he landed some solid combinations that was capped off with a left hook to the kisser that dropped Bone’ for good.

This was a great comeback win for Porter who came into this one with a loss of his IBF title against Kell Brooke that took place out in Carson, Calif., at the Stub Hub. He’s seemed to have regained his confidence and I’m sure he’d like to have a rematch with Brooke.

Next we saw Chris ” The Nightmare” Arreola return to the ring against a game Curtis Harper who got dropped in the first round with a series of solid shots. But some way was able to get back into the fight and rocked Arreola in the middle of this 8 rounder but just didn’t do enough to garner a win. And at the end of the day, all three judges scored the bout for Arreola.

In the main event we saw Andre Berto go against Josesito Lopez in a scheduled welterweight twelve rounder in which we saw the most entertaining bout of the evening.

These guys were really going at each other with stiff jabs and combinations and for a while it looked as if we were going to see Lopez upset Berto. But being the crafty and skillful fighter that he is, Berto was able to land a solid shot to the chin of Lopez and dropped him twice at 1 minute and 3 seconds in the fifth round and it was all over folks.

This was a sweet victory him and a tough loss for Lopez who trained hard for this one but came up short.

This was all telecast live on Spike TV and promoted by Goossen Promotions and another great show under Al Haymon’s leadership.

There’s a whole lot more coming from Haymon Boxing as we’re anticipating Lamont Peterson going against Danny Garcia, Peter “Kid Chocolate” Quillan going for the WBO middleweight title against Andy Lee, and Adonis Stevenson is set to go against Sakio Bika.

This is really going to be a big year for boxing. As I always say, we’ll see what happens.
