Cosmo Puts Black Women on the Wrong Side of Beauty Trends List

cosmo-feat article 21 Beauty Trends That Need To Die In 2015*Cosmopolitanthe magazine, is apparently not looking to win over black women anytime soon, judging by negative feedback its gotten for pictures that ran with an article it printed in January.

The story, which resurfaced Wednesday (April 1) on the Internet, is called “21 Beauty Trends That Need To Die In 2015.” The pictures that were featured displayed bad, outdated trends on one side, with a real woman wearing them in real life. On the other side is a real woman wearing the new, more appropriate trend the right way.

In all there were 21 categories. Out of those 21 categories, four featured Black women, (or women of color). All four of those women were included on the “dead”/bad trend side. The resurfacing of the story has generated a backlash against Cosmo for its depiction of black women in its article.

“Not only is this representation offensive and denigrating, it’s also not exactly an accurate depiction of the fashion, style and beauty landscape these days,” TheGrio.com noted.

“Black girls have always been the pushers of style and culture. You need look no further than Elle calling cornrows and Timbs the new fashion trends for women, fashion trends we, Black women, have been rocking for decades.”

Surely, they could have one undeniably Black or brown woman who’s doing it right.

The site goes on to express that Cosmo could’ve made more an effort to feature a Black or brown woman among those who are wearing the latest, more appropriate trend.

So with that, do you agree that Cosmo should’ve worked on getting more black women on the right trend side or is this more evidence of the noticeable lack of diversity in the media that continues to remain an issue in this day and time?
