D.L. Hughley Breaks Down in Tears Over Son’s Asperger’s Syndrome

D.L.Hughley*D.L. Hughley can joke around with the best of them, but when it comes to his son, the comedian is emotional.

Hughley opened up about raising his 26-year-old son, Kyle, who has Asperger’s Syndrome, during an appearance on “Oprah: Where Are They Now?” The interview proved to be an emotional one as Hughley broke down in tears when talking about Kyle, who was diagnosed with the condition at a young age.

“I think sometimes I don’t know for sure, but he’s gonna be fine,” Hughley said as he discussed how he and his son had to adhere to a very specific schedule. So much so that it carried over as Kyle grew up and attended college.

“Everything has to be the same,” Hughley explained. “He goes to work at the same time. He eats the same thing.”

Despite the routine, Hughley admitted that as his son gets older there are times when he receives hope from seeing Kyle branch out and try something new. Evidence of this was found as the funnyman shared a story in which his car was low on gas, and Kyle offered to fill it up.

“I’m a nervous wreck,” Hughley recalled while describing his feelings on waiting for his son to come back home from the running the errand. “So he comes back in and he gives me the receipt and the keys. And I could not stop crying, because he did something he was afraid to do.”

“I just didn’t believe he could do it,” he continued “And I held him and I said, ‘You’re gonna be all right.’”
