Denzel Reassembles ‘The Magnificent Seven’ – Gugu Examines CTE

denzel washington and gugu mbatha-raw*Looks like Denzel Washington is teaming up again with Antoine Fuqua for another potential blockbuster.

BET.com reports the duo, who worked together on 2001’s “Training Day” and the upcoming film adaptation of the ‘80’s TV show “The Equalizer,” are set to collaborate on a remake of John Sturges’ classic Western “The Magnificent Seven.”

Fuqua confirmed the reteaming, saying their version will take place during the Civil War.

While Denzel and Fuqua look to the past, Gugu Mbatha-Raw is staying in the present with director Ridley Scott‘s untitled NFL concussion drama. The “Belle” star will join Will Smith in the film, which will be based on the GQ article “Game Brain.”

The story follows Dr. Bennet Omalu, the forensic neuropathologist who raised public awareness for CTE (Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy) in a pro football player by being the first to discover the degenerative disease.

BET notes that the article, and presumably the film, takes a close look at the price paid by professional athletes in impact sports, and the political, cultural and corporate interests that fuel the professional sports industry.
