(L-R) Kareem Davis, Kentrell Collins, Adrian Clemons, Jerel Maddox, and Timothy Smith at Del Frisco’s Grille in New York City.

*When the invite read, “…intimate lunch with the cast of Oxygen’s ‘The Prancing Elites Project’ at Del Frisco’s Grille,” it was just that, intimate.

EURweb and several other media outlets dined at the Manhattan eatery with the dancing divas: Adrian Clemons, Kentrell Collins, Kareem Davis, Jerel Maddox, and Timothy Smith and heard their triumphant stories.

Collins from Mobile, Alabama, told EURweb associate Marie Moore that the show, “pretty much means the world to me because it’s something we didn’t expect to happen.  It just kinda happened.”

Collins added:

“Hopefully people will understand us more. Understand that we just want people to be accepted for who they are, whether they be gay, straight, whether a girl wants to play football or [whatever], we just want people to be accepted for who they are.”

When asked what will it be like having this type of platform,  Davis people will begin to hear on a large scale what they are all about.

“Having a TV show is almost like have a huge microphone because you’re reaching so many people,” he said. “So the message we’re getting to put out there is ours and nobody else’s. That’s probably the most exciting thing about having this type of show, getting people to see what it really means to be us and not some picture painted by the media because we spend a lot of time defending ourselves behind crazy stuff like the parade we did. It was over a year ago and we didn’t look for any type of attention. The fact that it got attention made us feel like no matter what we do, it’s gonna be something. We do a lot of good things but nobody wants to see the good stuff we do. They’re always going to see the bad. We have a lot of supporters and I feel like the show will kind of back them.”

Currently excluded from competitions and banned from participating in several hometown and national parades, “The Prancing Elites” seek other ways to showcase their talent from dancing in the stands at college football games to performing on a boat cruise. Despite professional rejections, family disapproval and tensions, personal health crises and heartbreaks, the group continues to band together in the face of adversity.

In a released  statement, Rod Aissa, Executive Vice President of Original Programming and Development, at Oxygen Media said:

“‘The Prancing  Elites’ positive perseverance through life’s countless hurdles and rejections will tug at the heartstrings of Oxygen’s young, open-minded and diverse audiences. With vibrant personalities, an abundance of humor and even more determination, this authentic group holds true to themselves and never stops celebrating who they are.”

Interestingly, the “dude” of the group, Kareem Davis, made a bold statement saying that this show will inspire those that have been told no, that one day you will get a YES. Enough said right? No, Kentrell quickly noted, “We are not speaking or living our lives for the entire LGBT or African American community, only living our lives for us five…that’s it.”

With that said, watch the package below for the full interview where they discuss drama, advice to haters and you may even catch a little side eye from the “NeNe” of the group, Jerel Maddox.
