LeBron James Has ‘Very Few Good Friends’ and a Lot of ‘Teammates’ in the NBA

LeBron James and Kevin Love

*People appear to be surprised that Cleveland Cavaliers teammates LeBron James and Kevin Love are not good friends – what with all of the hoopla made of their relationship lately. Actually, just like any group of people outside of the public figure arena, who work together, you have folks you hang with, and then there’s your true-blue peeps. James admits to having only three of them in the NBA.

And Love wasn’t on his short list.

According to LeBron James, anyone outside of his three “very good friends” are simply, “teammates.”

Last week, James posted a “Clique Up!!” photo of him and some of his Cavaliers teammates. Love wasn’t in the picture. Then Love went on ESPN’s Mike & Mike the next day and his relationship with James was one of the topics he talked about. Soon after tongues started waggin’ because he admitted that he and James were not “best friends.”

Still, that doesn’t mean they hate each other. In fact, James recently told Joe Vardon of the Northeast Ohio Media Group, the three men in the NBA that he considered to be his “very good friends.” He said:

“People get so infatuated with the best of friends, things of that nature. First of all, I’ve got three very good friends in this league, and that’s Carmelo (Anthony), and that’s C.P. (Chris Paul), and that’s D-Wade. And after that I have a bunch of teammates. I have guys I ride for every day.

But Kyrie is a guy I understand how important he is to this team, how important he is. And the same with Kev as well.”

However, “best friends” are not a main ingredient in the world of the Cavaliers superstar. These men are professionals who know that they all show up to work with their eye on the same prize.

“Friends or no friends, at the end of the day we’re all here to do one thing, and that’s to win,” James said.

Now it will be interesting to hear the conversation around the two teammates’ relationship revisited this summer; when Love approaches free agency.

But that’s OK. Since winning is all that matters in the NBA, all the Cavaliers have to do is take the championship title this season, and any talk about “relationships” will take a back seat.
