*Jerrod Carmichael is afraid to tell his judgmental parents that he plans to move in with his longtime girlfriend Maxine in the upcoming NBC comedy “The Carmichael Show.”

And you would be, too, if those parental side-eyes were coming from David Alan Grier and Loretta Devine.

“I play his mother Cynthia,” Devine revealed at NBCUniversal’s recent press day. Her Obama-loving character is described as “always, always, always right with Jesus.”

Carmichael’s on-screen alter ego wants to avoid discussing his new living arrangement with the parents because of his own reluctance to move in with his therapist-in-training girlfriend (Amber West), a decision that becomes all the more real once parents are told.

The storylines are inspired by Carmichael’s own stand-up and relationships with his real girlfriend and family. Grier’s “say anything, contrarian” character is based on the comedian’s father. There’s also his ever-hustling brother, played by Lil Rel Howery.

“A lot of it is based on his family, but it’s also sort of his way of looking at things,” Devine said of Carmichael’s storylines this season.

Below, the actress goes into more detail about the show’s parental point of view toward Jerrod:

NBC has ordered six episodes of “The Carmichael Show,” previously titled “Go Jerrod Go,” with a premiere date set for Wednesday, August 5 at 9:30 p.m.
