Michael Sam Has 50/50 Shot at Playing Football in Canada

Michael-Sam*Is a return to football in Michael Sam’s future?

The answer looks to be a yes, according to the Montreal Gazette, which mentioned that Sam has a 50/50 shot of playing football in Canada with the Montreal Alouettes.

“The CFL is cut out perfectly for his style,” Alouettes general manager Jim Popp told the Gazette Tuesday (March 31). “It would give him the opportunity to do what he does best. His agent knows. They’re ready. They know this (CFL) may be what it is. It’s Michael who has to make the decision — and he might never come.

“The indications were he was ready to come last fall, and he’s still not with us. So I really don’t know. Seriously, I’d say our chances are 50/50,” he added.

The possibility of Sam playing football in Canada comes after his short run in the NFL as the first openly gay player drafted by the league. Prior to being selected by the St. Louis Rams in the seventh round last year, the Alouettes gained the CFL rights to Sam when he was a senior at the University of Missouri.

Although Sam recorded three sacks for the Rams in the 2014 preseason, he failed to make the team’s season-opening roster. The defensive end later played on the Dallas Cowboys’ practice squad before that team released him in October.

More recently, Sam participated in the NFL’s veteran free agent combine. He currently be seen competing on ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars.”
