*Viola Davis will star as famous abolitionist Harriet Tubman in a project being produced by Doug Ellin and Steven Spielberg’s Amblin TV for HBO Films.

Based on the biography Bound For The Promised Land by historian Kate Clifford Larson, the film, currently in development, follows Tubman’s life – from her birth in slavery, to her escape via an intricate escape network of secret routes and safe houses known as the Underground Railroad, to leading more than 300 slaves to freedom in the North through the same network, to her fighting with the Union during the Civil War.

This is just the latest in a number of Underground Railroad projects in the works. As previously reported, WGN America has the Akiva Goldsman-produced 10-episode drama series “Underground,” starring Christopher Meloni and Jurnee Smollett-Bell, with Kanye West expected to serve as musical consultant, while NBC is prepping miniseries “Freedom Run” produced by Stevie Wonder.
