Who is He? Actor Allen Maldonado Pops Up in a Handful of Roles

allen maldonado,

*Breakthrough actor Allen Maldonado is showing up everywhere — from TV to movie roles.

He starred on FX’s You’re the Worst” from the creators of “Weeds” and “Orange is the New Black.”

Also, he starred on Aaron McGruder‘s Adult Swim series, “Black Jesus” and BET’s coming-of-age drama, “The Start Up.”

But he’s taking it to the big screen — he co-starred in Denzel Washington‘s “The Equalizer” and Jennifer Aniston‘s “Cake.”

“I’m humbled to be in this position,” Maldonado told ABC News. “Coming through what I’ve come through, I truly believe I’m meant to do what to I’m doing right now.”

Maldonado grew up in Rialto, Calif., outside Los Angeles — a gang-driven neighborhood. He’s of Puerto Rican and African American descent — raised by a single mother after his father died from cancer when he was a kid.

Regardless of his surroundings, he skipped a grade and graduated from high school at 16. But he still hung out with the wrong people.

But one day he saw a very tired and exhausted woman walking down a street where men were playing dice and drinking, and it changed his life.

“I see this lady coming down the alley and she looked extremely tired. There was something about her. She looked exhausted,” Maldonado said.

Maldonado realized it was his own mother, as she came closer. He added, “it broke my heart. From that moment, I decided I was going to do something to change that.”

He fell in love with acting his senior year of high school. He auditioned for “The Young and the Restless” at 21. And he got his first major part.

But his dream was seemingly cut short when a drunk driver struck the walking actor — breaking his leg and curving his spine as a result of the near-death accident.

He recovered six months later.

“I got resurrected. Anything moving forward is heaven.”
