Baltimore’s Police Union Has Foe in Prosecutor Marilyn Mosby

marilyn mosby

*Hmm, we, like a whole bunch of folks, especially Baltimore police officials, didn’t see this one coming.

On Friday, as we reported earlier, Marilyn Mosby, the Baltimore State Attorney, called an unexpected press conference and said that the officers involved in the death of Freddie Gray would be prosecuted.

Uh oh. That’s never happened before and of course the Baltimore police union immediately made her public enemy number one … as far as they are concerned.

This is also an interesting and significant development since Mosby comes from a law enforcement background.

Even though Mosby explained that she’d filed charges against the officers based on the autopsy and evidence gathered after Gray’s death, the police union is already working to get her removed from the case.

“I have very deep concerns about the many conflicts of interest presented by your office conducting an investigation in this case,” Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 3 President Gene Ryan wrote to Mosby in an open letter.

In the letter, Ryan says Mosby also has a “personal and professional” relationship with the Gray family attorney.

“It is clear that your husband’s political future will be directly impacted, for better or worse, by the outcome of your investigation,” he added, referencing her husband, Nick Mosby, who is a Baltimore Councilman.

It seems that Mosby – who’s known for being tough on crime – is for real and says what she means and means what she says:

“To the people of Baltimore and the demonstrators across America, I heard your call for ‘no justice, no peace,’” Mosby said earlier today. “Your peace is sincerely needed as I work to deliver justice on behalf of this young man. To those that are angry or hurt or have their own experience of injustice, I urge you to channel your energy peacefully.”

Yeah, that kind of talk and action would be enough to start the cop’s union to trippin’. And at this point, that’s about all they do.
