*Kanye West made a whole “successful” album about dropping out of college at Chicago State University. Now he’s garnered an honorary doctorate degree from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago on Monday.
“It would have been easier if I could have said I had a degree at the Art Institute of Chicago,” said West who would’ve emphasized in apparel, film and performance if he had attended the institute.
West was 20 years old when his mother, Donda West, taught at the state university and he dropped out to pursue his music career.
West was humbled by the experience and shared his honoring with 900 graduating students. Nevertheless, some students felt there were more deserving artists to honor than him, according to Page Six.
A petition was passed around and received 1,500 signatures against West receiving the doctorate. Although in true West fashion, he was unapologetic as well. He said his, “… medium is public opinion and the world is my canvas.”
