*The family of Freddie Gray and their attorney responded to State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby’s decision to file charges against the six police officers involved in his arrest.

Gray’s stepfather Richard Shipley spoke on behalf of the family, saying they are “satisfied” with the charges, and it is time for Baltimore to begin healing.

“We ask that whomever come to our city, a city that we love, a city that we live in, come in peace,” Shipley said.

Shipley said the last thing that Freddie would want is to see people of Baltimore lose their jobs and businesses because of his death.

William Murphy, an attorney for the Gray family, said at the news conference that they were shocked by Mosby’s decision, but it was a “good shock.” He hopes Gray’s death will eventually result in new era of better policing in the city and nationwide.

“If Freddie Gray is not to die in vain we must seize this opportunity to reform police departments throughout this country.”
