*Gennady “GGG” Golovkin in case many of you haven’t heard is the WBA and IBO middleweight boxing champion who hails out of Kiev, Ukrain. He’s considered to be by many in boxing the best pound per pound middleweight in the sport, even though there’s a guy named Miguel Cotto out there who holds the WBC title belt.
And should Golovkin get past his next opponent this weekend who happens to be Willie Monroe Jr., the stage is set for him to go against Cotto who was able to wrestle the WBC title from Sergio Martinez a while back.
Golovkin possesses a perfect ring record of 32-0 with 29 coming by way of knockout. This guy is dangerous folks, and for Monroe to step up to the plate and challenge him speaks volumes because there’s not many guys out there that are willing to do that.
Monroe Jr. on the other hand hails out of Ithaca, New York with a ring record of 19-1 with 6 coming by way of knockout. They call him “The Mongoose” which happens to be the same monicker that the great Archie Moore use to carry. Time will tell if he can live up to that one. Archie Moore in case any of you don’t know was the former world light heavyweight champion who held the title from the mid fifties, to the early sixties, and was inducted into the International Boxing Hall Of Fame.
This bout with Golovkin and Monroe is a big boxing event and will be making a lot of noise in the boxing world especially if Monroe is able to upset Golovkin. As I always say, we’ll see what happens.
It’s all set to take place out at the newly renovated fabulous Forum out in Inglewood, Calif. which is now owned and operated by Madison Square Garden. And if any of you are interested in watching this one and can’t make it there, it will be telecast live on HBO Championship Boxing.
