*You could say “DeSean Jackson: Home Team” has found a home at BET. In fact the series about the NFLer debuted on June 30 at 8:30pm E/P and 7:30pm Central.
The docu-series/reality show will chronicle the life of NFL player, music artist, film producer, fashion label owner, music producer and label owner DeSean Jackson. The person behind the flourish and swagger of DeSean’s show is his big brother, Byron Jackson.
Byron, who was a practice-squad player on the Kansas City Chiefs before becoming a filmmaker, has been pitching this idea for a few years. In 2013 Byron released a documentary, “DeSean Jackson: The Making of a Father’s Dream,” of his brother’s life, relationship with their father Bill Jackson and his rise to fame. The documentary, like the new series, is proof that he has been a part of DeSean’s team and rooting for him since day one. Byron says he has been recording DeSean all of his life, because the footage “would be needed someday.” That day has come.
With all of the money and fame come misperceptions. From talk of DeSean being gang affiliated to his attitude, it’s time to show more of DeSean off the field, the team behind him and then some.
“We trained him to be fast, to have the mindset of a champion, to be a hard worker and he became it, who he is today,” Byron said when clarifying exactly who the home team consisted of; DeSean’s mother and “momager” Gayle, his sister and assistant A’Dreea, his publicist and new girlfriend Kayla and a host of friends their “dad assembled all around DeSean” from day one; Travis, Derrick Booker, Darrian his track coach.
Aside from filming, Byron heads a multi-media sports developmental company SportsRhythms, with a goal of “helping children find their rhythm in life.” Byron has also recently started a new foundation called Play4Life which is still in its working phases but will encourage children to not “play for sports” but to “play for life.”
Byron is an Executive Producer of the show and will be co-starring along-side his brother and family members. “DeSean Jackson: Home Team” airs Tuesdays at 8:30pm E/P (7:30pm Central) on BET.
