*Michelle Obama began her European trip in London this morning with a spot of tea with Prince Harry.
The first lady sat down with the British royal one day after her arrival in London. According to Kensington Palace, FLOTUS and Harry discussed her “Let Girls Learn” initiative and their “shared interest in support for veterans and their families.”
Prince Harry also met with the Obama daughters, 16-year-old Malia and Sasha, 14, as well as Michelle Obama’s mother, Marian Robinson, who are all accompanying her on the weeklong trip.
Following her visit with Prince Harry, Mrs. Obama visited a school in London where she urged girls to complete their education.
“The world needs more girls like you growing up to lead our parliaments and our board rooms and our courtrooms and our universities,” she said. We need you. We need people like you tackling the pressing problems we face — climate change and poverty, violent extremism, disease.”
The first lady announced a new five-year, $200 million partnership between the United States and United Kingdom to increase access to education for adolescent girls in African nations affected by conflict, such as Sierra Leone, Liberia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
“We want to make sure that every door is open to girls like you, and not just here in England, not just in America, but in every corner of the globe,” she said.
Mrs. Obama met with Prime Minister David Cameron at 10 Downing St. later Tuesday – with her daughters and mother in tow.
After her two-day stop in the U.K., Obama will travel to the Milan Expo in Italy to promote her “Let’s Move!” initiative to combat childhood obesity.
She is also expected to visit U.S. troops stationed in Vincenza as part of her “Joining Forces” to boost educational and job opportunities for service members and their families.
The first family will also visit tourist sites in Venice before returning to Washington.
