Ice Cube: Son Playing Him in NWA Pic is Like ‘Back to the Future’

ce-cube-son-OShea-Jackson-Jr*The N.W.A. biopic “Straight Outta Compton” doesn’t have much in common with the classic ‘80’s film “Back to the Future,” but in Ice Cube’s eyes, there is something that both movies can boast.

That something would be a main character going back in time to encounter his high-school-aged father. Whereas Marty McFly’s adventure was a work of fiction, Cube’s has a real life McFly in his son O’Shea Jackson Jr. playing him in the highly anticipated film.

“I’m living the ultimate dream as a producer, as an artist, and as a father,” Cube told Yahoo! from the Los Angeles set of “Straight Outta Compton” last September regarding how the experience reminds him of the time-traveling comedy, which starred Michael J. Fox as McFly.

“It’s already like Back to the Future for me anyway. I feel like if I run into my son in the hallway at the wrong time, I could change history.”

Although Jackson is earning high marks from his dad for his performance, both  are quick to insist that despite obvious connections, the younger Jackson’s casting in “Straight Outta Compton” wasn’t a sure thing.

“It wasn’t a shoo-in because he had to do a screen test for Universal,” Cube said. “It wasn’t just me who was giving him the OK, but the studio was saying that he was the best man for the job.”

For Jackson Jr., “Straight Outta Compton” is the result of hard work in preparing to do Cube justice on the big screen in his acting debut. According to Yahoo!, Jackson Jr. spent two years prepping for the role while working with acting coaches in New York and Los Angeles.

“It got to a point where I didn’t want to see anyone else play him, it would’ve killed me to see someone else play him,” said Jackson, who has followed in his father’s steps with a rap career under the stage name OMG (Oh My Goodness) “So it became an obsession to get this part.”

Directed by F. Gary Gray, “Straight Outta Compton” chronicles the rise of N.W.A. in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s as well as its tense relationship with law enforcement and government.. The legendary group, regarded as pioneers in “gangsta rap,” was comprised of Dr. Dre (Corey Hawkins), Eazy-E (Jason Mitchell), MC Ren (Aldis Hodge), and DJ Yella (Neil Brown, Jr.).
