*From Luther Vandross and Smokey Robinson to Erykah Badu and Anthony Hamilton, soul music allows the listener to feel something. It’s everywhere, from influencing your favorite artist to soulful samples embedded in your favorite rap songs.
Hundreds of fans filled the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills, CA on June 25th for the 2015 ASCAP Rhythm & Soul Music Awards. Artists such as Jazmine Sullivan, Sevyn Streeter, BJ The Chicago Kid & Michelle Williams were in attendance. Rap group Migos & Coolio also came out to support.
Stars that hit the red carpet such as Sullivan, Migos, Williams, Sevyn and BJ spoke out about the Charleston Shooting.
“My prayers are with everybody that has been touched with this in crazy ways from the families to the people in Charleston,” said BJ The Chicago Kid. Being from Chicago it let’s the world know that it’s not just my city that’s crazy and at the end of the day we need to pray for each other, not just my city.”
The show featured performances from iconic Gospel Singer Smokie Norful, Jazmine Sullivan and Mr. Like to Cha Cha himself, D.R.A.M. Timbaland graced the stage speaking words of wisdom to those chasing their dreams.
“It’s not about losing that defines a man but it’s about how you bounce back” he said.
He received the “Songwriter of The Year” award for Beyonce’s “Drunk In Love” and “Partition” as well as Jay Z’s “Tom Ford.”
The production team also played a video that featured shout-outs from Timbaland’s closest friends including Missy Elliott and Empire’s Yazz, Jussie Smollett, and Serayah McNeil.
Lauryn Hill was lady of the night as she was being honored with the Golden Note Award. Hill closed out the show by performing in and beautiful bright green jumpsuit with her live band. The performance featured hit songs “Ex-Factor,” “Lost Ones” and “Doo-Wop (That Thing.)” The crowd went crazy as they chanted the words to her songs.
