*Author James Arawole hopes that his new novel entitled Blood Is Thicker Than Sugar will be an entertaining and encouraging novel for young diabetics who believe that success on and off the fields and courts are out of reach.
With 13.2 percent of all African Americans aged 20 years or older diagnosed with some form of diabetes, itÂ’s refreshing to hear a story that can bring awareness to the issue. The young adult, sports genre fiction will cater to kids who live in areas with low literacy rates.
The story follows Marcus, a prep basketball standout living with type-1 diabetes just after a lackluster senior season of prep basketball.
“I wanted to write something that no one else had and at the same time, do something meaningful,” said Arawole. “This story is special to me because my dad died due to diabetes complications, and because it takes place in my hometown of Washington, DC.”
The Kickstarter Campaign:
Of course, ambitions require funding and that is the reason for his Kickstarter campaign. He hopes to raise the pledge goal of $5,000.00 to print 250 copies of Blood Is Thicker Than Sugar for distribution to public libraries in his native Washington, D.C. and adjacent areas in Maryland and Virginia. The remaining funds will go towards other costs associated with self-publishing and honoring backerÂ’s rewards. Some of the prizes include autographed books, posters, bookmarks and lunch with the author. Mr. Arawole is also working with The George Goodman summer league commissioner Miles Rawls in hopes of getting local athletes to help contribute by offering autographed apparels as pledge incentives. About James Arawole
Mr. Arawole journeyed into writing in 2005 while attending New York Film Academy where he studied writing for screen and film production. With the experience he gained from school, he secured a job as a production assistant for the season 5 of the award-winning series on HBO, The Wire. “I remember reading scripts days before the shoot and being so inspired. I started reading a lot of George Pelecanos after I had seen the work he did on the show.” After catching the writing bug, he went on to receive his bachelor’s degree in entertainment business at Full Sail University.
