NY Giants Learn of Player’s Finger Amputation on Twitter

*The Giants organization was blind-sided Wednesday evening when reports surfaced that Jason Pierre-Paul had his right index finger amputated after a 4th of July fireworks injury.

Jason had his right index finger amputated below the knuckle after he was hospitalized following a fireworks mishap in Miami and the NFL team didn’t learn about the accident until ESPN obtained the player’s medical chart and posted it online.

Instead of informing his team, ESPN’s Adam Schefter tweeted about the accident. He even posted a screenshot of Pierre-Paul’s medical chart. To complicate matters further, Jackson Memorial Hospital refused to give NY Giants executives access to Pierre-Paul, citing the HIPAA privacy laws.

A source said Pierre-Paul was presented with several options for fixing his hand, amputation being the best way for him to heal quickly enough to return to the field this season.

From the NY Daily News:

It’s unclear how much time the veteran Giant will miss, but the source said Pierre-Paul being on the field for Week 1 can’t be ruled out, and that the defensive end being placed on the non-football injury (NFL) list at the start of camp is a certainty, if he signs his one-year, $14.8 million franchise tender.

The information about Pierre-Paul’s condition may have been released by his camp; otherwise, issues of medical privacy and HIPAA Privacy Rule violations are at play.

While Giants running back Rashad Jennings did not confirm on Wednesday whether or not he had spoken to his teammate, he did reveal that he was not surprised by the scarcity of information being reported. He also advised Jason to lay low.

“You don’t want to put out something that ain’t right or isn’t accurate and try to force something that no one knows the answer to,” Jennings said. “It doesn’t surprise me right now; it’s just unfortunate. But hopefully, he’ll be able to heal up. I don’t know if he’s had surgery, I don’t know anything. Don’t nobody know, besides maybe the doctors.

“I think he should keep to himself for right now regardless if he’s fine or not. That’s what I would do if I was him, because everybody’s going to hound him,” Jennings said.
