*Venus and Serena Williams won their respective second round matches at Wimbledon today, and are now one match away from a possible fourth round showdown against each other.
In today’s record-breaking 96 degree heat – the hottest day at Wimbledon since 1976 (the average July 1st temperature is 66 degrees) – five-time champion Venus took care of her opponent Yulia Putintseva in straight sets (7-6, 6-4) to end the day’s play on No 2 Court.
Earlier, Serena breezed past Hungary’s Timea Babos in straight sets (6-4, 6-1).
Serena was extra aggressive in her match. She whizzed 12 aces by Babos after having just three in her first round match. She also attacked Babos’ serves — which averaged 119 mph this tournament — with huge return attempts.
One of her rare wayward returns in the second set clipped the chair umpire, drawing laughter from the crowd.

Sloane Stephens also advanced to the third round today, beating fellow American Lauren Davis (6-4, 6-4). Her next opponent will be Czech player Lucie Safarova.
