*The website Re-NewsIt, a right-wing portal that carries the tag “Keeping the facts straight on the latest news stories,” claims to have dug up information that exposes a leading #BlackLivesMatter organizer – and recipient of Oprah Winfrey’s Morehouse scholarship for black men – as a white man who is posing as black.

Shaun King, the so-called “Facebook Pastor” who regularly speaks out against police brutality on social media, had claimed in past interviews that his father is black and his mother is white, but a birth certificate discovered by Re-NewsIt lists both of his parents as white.

Also King’s race is listed as white in a police report that followed a so-called “racist attack” he suffered in high school – an incident he had labeled a hate crime.

Last month, the website Daily Caller posted a story detailing how a police report of the alleged racist attack didn’t match up with King’s account of what happened:

While King has said that he was attacked by up to a dozen “racist” and “redneck” students, official records show that the altercation involved only one other student. And while King has claimed that he suffered a “brutal” beating that left him clinging to life, the police report characterized King’s injuries as “minor.”

At least two profiles written about King have asserted that the assault was one of Kentucky’s first registered hate crimes. But Keith Broughton, the former Versailles police detective, told TheDC that the case was never classified as a hate incident.

And none of the sources that keep track of hate crimes, such as the FBI, have records of one having occurred at the high school at that time.

King also applied for and accepted an Oprah Winfrey scholarship to Morehouse College, which are only given to black men. In November 2014, King wrote in his blog for DailyKos.com:

“Oprah Winfrey paid my way through Morehouse. The leadership scholarship that I received from her is why I have a college degree today.”

King, 35, responded to the controversy over his race on Twitter by saying, “Out of LOVE for my family, I’ve never gone public with my racial story because it’s hurtful, scandalous, and it’s MY STORY.”

King also tweeted of his family: ‘The key facts about my biological relatives are all wrong. They tried, but my family, like many of yours, is one big mess. …Like many of you, I have siblings I don’t know, siblings I’m estranged from, and a family full of secrets, divorce, affairs, etc. …No 2 siblings in my family have the same set of parents. We’re all over the place. Some of us are not even blood relatives. …Trying hard not to slip into a deep funk over all of this garbage, but my life, my past, my pain, my family, ARE VERY REAL TO ME.”
