We determine who we are by what we do.”  Katia van Dees

Prior to meeting director Aleksander Bach at the Crosby Hotel in New York for an exclusive interview, he undoutedly had been told how much I loved “Hitman: Agent 47.”

With a big smile on his face, Bach’s first words to me were, ”So for a woman you liked the movie. I appreciate that.” And how could one not appreciate “Hitman: Agent 47” that opens this week.

Characters like Agent 47 would definitely be appreciated in wiping out cowardly terrorists who wreak havor on innocent people.

“Hitman: Agent 47” centers on an elite assassin, played by Rupert Friend (“Homeland”), who was genetically engineered from conception to be the perfect killing machine, and is known only by the last two digits on the barcode tattooed on the back of his neck. He is the culmination of decades of research and forty-six earlier agent clones. They are endowed with unprecedented strength, speed, stamina and intelligence. Agent 47 latest target is a mega-corporation that plans to unlock the secret of Agent 47’s past to create an army of killers whose powers surpass even his own. Teaming up with a young woman who may hold the secret to overcoming their powerful and clandestine enemies, 47 confronts stunning revelations about his own origins and squares off in an epic battle with his deadliest foe.

Aleksander, has your background in videos and music enhanced your moviemaking skills?

ALEKSANDER BACH: A lot! A lot! In film it’s all about rhythm and the reason why I love film so much because you are bringing all parts of the arts together. It’s imagery, literature, music, and you bring all these things together, especially music. I really loved the score of this film and how we made it. The music is just as important. Everything has a rhythm and this helps me a lot in my work.

Rupert is amazing in this film, but I know Paul Walker was originally set to star in this role.

AB: Yes, it was horrible what happened to Paul and it’s very clear that it would’ve been a completely different movie. With all respect to him, I’m very happy that Rupert is in this role because he has that something special in his eyes.

Why was this project so attractive to you?

AB: Audiences are smart and Agent 47 is challenging and intelligent. That’s the reason why I loved Agent 47 and the video game because he’s doing things you don’t expect. I always had a love for this kind of media,  telling a story ,  making people feel and  inspiring them. I want to make movies where people are definitely entertained but there’s always something they can take away. In this movie there’s a line Katia van Dees says to her father, “We determine who we are by the things we do.”

I did see some blacks strategically placed in the film. Was this a conscious decision?

AB: I definitely wanted a mixture of a lot of different characters because nowadays movies are watched by so many people worldwide; and of course, why not. I mean yeah, I think it’s a more subconscious than conscious decision. But this goes, for me, without saying.

Zachary Quinto, Hannah Ware, Ciaran Hinds, Prince William E. Morris, and Emelilio Rivera also star.
