ABCNews.com reports via the Associated Press that the 52-year-old former NFL wide receiver and his mother, Allene McGhee, were found guilty Friday (Aug. 7) for the part they played in a mortgage scam.

“Authorities said Fryar and McGhee provided false wage information on her loan applications and claimed she earned thousands of dollars a month as an event coordinator for Fryar’s church,” the AP wrote. “Authorities said the pair made just a few payments on four of the loans and banks eventually wrote the loans off as losses.”

In 2009, Fryar and McGhee used the scam to rid seven banks of $1.2 million, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported Friday.

Fryar’s conviction resulted after being on trial for three weeks. During his 17-year career in the former five-time Pro Bowler played for the New England Patriots, Miami Dolphins, Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Redskins. While he was convicted, Fryar claimed he took part in the mortgage scam after being persuaded by William Barksdale, a convicted felon who served as a witness for the prosecution after being previously pleading guilty to a conspiracy charge that carried a 20-month sentence. The AP notes the Fryar conspiracy charge had a 20-month sentence attached to it.

The news agency added that Fryar and McGhee declined to accept plea deals of five and three years, respectively. As a result, the pair now face up to 10 years in prison.

Fryar’s sentencing date is set for Oct. 2.
