OK ladies, we’ve got some eye candy for ya. And it’s a historic first, we might add.
None other than Idris Elba is gracing the cover of Maxim. And if you know anything about Maxim, you know it’s not where you usually find testosterone on the cover.
Unlike in the past, where it showed off scantily clad females (umm, er, as in almost naked), the magazine’s September issue, on newsstands Wednesday (08-05-15), features the suave British actor.
In the past hot stars like Christina Aguilera, Megan Fox and others have posed for Maxim in lingerie and skimpy getups, but Elba is fully clothed. Yes, Maxim is obviously going in a different direction with Elba.
“Man Up,” his cover line appropriately reads. “Idris Elba: Actor, Musician, Racecar Driver, and All-Around Badass.”
Inside the issue, Elba – wearing items for Fall – poses in well-cut suits, thick sweaters, and smart jackets.
So what’s up with the new look? It could be because Idris Elba is well, Idris Elba, but most likely it’s because editor-in-chief Kate Lanphear, who took over the mag a year ago wants to broaden its appeal.
However, we find it interesting that they chose a brother to do so. Props to Maxim for that. The bottom line is they chose the right man. Period.
“It’s historical,” said Elba. “It’s fresh, it marks sort of a new way for the magazine to go.”
