*Back in 2013, Kanye West proposed to Kim Kardashian at a private party held at AT&K Park in San Francisco.
The staged moment was filmed for an episode of “Keeping Up With the Kardashians,” but an unauthorized video of the stunt made its way to several media outlets and websites such as YouTube, and the man responsible for the leak has settled with the couple for over $400K.
TMZ has learned Youtube co-founder Chad Hurley has agreed to pay Kim and Kanye $440,000. The couple sued Hurley, claiming he manipulated his way into the event back in 2013 to witness the proposal. Hurley secretly recorded video and posted it on MixBit, a video-sharing service he co-founded and launched in 2013.
In October 2006, Hurley and his two business partners sold YouTube for $1.65 billion to Google. Kim and Kanye’s lawyer said Chad recorded the video because he needed his next big hit after several failed projects following his YouTube sale.
“My clients brought this case because they take confidentiality agreements seriously,” Kardashian and West’s lawyer told E! News exclusively. “We are gratified that California’s trial and appellate courts upheld all our claims in this matter. With Mr. Hurley’s settlement payment, we believe a fair and just outcome has been achieved.”
Kardashian is currently expecting her second child, a boy. The E! network paid nearly $3 million to cover the cost of Kim and Kanye’s elaborate Italian wedding in 2014. They spent their honeymoon editing their wedding photos to perfection to post for Instagram likes.
In related news, to mark the 10th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, Slate chatted with some of the folks working at NBC who witnessed Kanye deliver his now infamous “George Bush doesn’t care about black people” line during A Concert for Hurricane Relief.
While West, Bush and comedian Mike Myers have all since discussed the incident, not much as been said from the people working in the NBC control room, until now.
Frank Radice, who served as musical director and senior producer, told the publication:
“I remember hearing the words that were coming out of his mouth and looking down at the script and [thinking], ‘this is not—this is not going well,’ … I remember saying [to someone] ‘it was good TV… it was controversial,” he said. “And it stopped everything cold.” The small studio audience that included celebrities like Lohan and DiCaprio was “eerily quiet.”
As Mediate reports, executive producer Rick Kaplan never intended to cut Kanye off:
“There was never a thought that we were going to just cut him off,” he said. “This was an extraordinary moment, and however ugly it might turn out to be, you don’t need to make it uglier.”
“Ultimately, it isn’t necessarily an ugly moment, it’s an honest moment,” Kaplan added.
