*GARDENA, CA – In honor of the first African American golfer to be granted full status on the PGA tour, Charlie Sifford, Los Angeles County Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas, Charlie Sifford Jr., Sifford’s former caddy Jimmy Green, former California State Assemblymember Steve Bradford, along with local community members, hosted an event Sunday, August 16, to rename 120th Street and Western Avenue in front of the Chesterfield Golf Course to “Charlie Sifford Drive.”

Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas, along with assistance from former State Assemblyman Steve Bradford, was instrumental in spearheading this effort in recognition of the iconic and celebrated golfer.  Mr. Sifford is in the World Golf Hall of Fame and was the recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom. He won the Los Angeles Open and the Gardena Valley Open.

An avid golfer himself, former Assemblymember Steve Bradford had the distinct privilege of knowing Mr. Sifford personally, playing golf with him, and looking up to him as a mentor and friend. It was Mr. Sifford who inspired former Assemblyman Bradford to never give up and to run for the Gardena City Council, where he ultimately became the first-ever African American elected to a seat on that governing body.
