Regina King Surprised Over Emmy Nomination, Speaks on ‘American Crime’ Season 2

regina king*After speaking out on the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences’ lack of recognizing African Americans and other minorities for their work on the small screen with an Emmy nomination, Regina King felt her outspokenness sealed her own fate in terms of being nominated herself.

However, despite what she felt, the Academy is shining a light on King with an Emmy nomination for her of her performance as the passionate Muslim sister of a man falsely accused of murder on ABC’s “American Crime.”

“There have been so many people of color, not just black people, that … you don’t see them at the Emmys, you don’t see them nominated,” King told TheWrap in a video interview.

“And I wrote a piece about it. I included statistics. So I just kinda figured, once I dropped that in the Huffington Post, I’ll probably never be nominated.”

King’s Emmy nod was one of 10 for “American Crime.” The John Ridley-created limited series, examines race, class and faith in America. In addition to King, “American Crime” stars Felicity Huffman and Timothy Hutton were nominated as well as supporting actor Richard Cabral and the show itself for Outstanding Limited Series.

As for King, she’s gearing up to start shooting season 2 of “American Crime” this week in Austin, Texas. This go around, the actress will portray a new character while being paired with Andre Benjamin. The two will play the well-to-do parents of a high school student who is involved in a suspected crime.

“The crime in this installment is about a young man who’s accusing someone of rape. It involves a basketball team,” King teased about the different approach taken for the upcoming season as opposed to the focus on issue of race amid a murder in season 1. “It also, I feel like, is going to touch a lot on class.”
